    1st International Annual Conference on
    Education for Democratic Citizenship:
    Educating Youth for Democratic Futures

    February 26th to March 1st, 2014
    Marrakech, Morocco

Research has shown that effective democratic citizenship requires the education of young people in the content, skills and attitudes necessary for their active participation in the political process as adults. Recently, the Carnegie Middle East Center released a report that concludes that “Citizenship education in the Arab world is a key element in education reform and in the development of future pluralistic societies as well as sustainable political systems and economic models.”

The Council of Europe Charter on Education for Democratic Citizenship defines education for democratic citizenship (EDC) as “…education, training, dissemination, information, practices and activities, which aim by equipping learners with knowledge, skills and understanding to empower them to exercise and defend their democratic rights and responsibilities in society, to value diversity and to play an active part in democratic life, with a view to the promotion and protection of democracy and the rule of law”.

The Moroccan Center for Civic Education in collaboration with its international and local partners will hold the 1st International Conference on Education for Democratic Citizenship to explore how teachers and schools can educate learners to be effective and active citizens who are committed to democratic principles. The conference will also take stock of the reforms taking place since the beginning of the Arab Spring and survey the post-uprising need for citizenship education.

Under the theme of “Educating Youth for Democratic Futures,” the conference will provide a forum for dialogue and the sharing of innovative practices, experience and expertise in the field of democratic citizenship education, with a focus on classroom implementation. EDC has become one of the goals shaping the reform of educational systems internationally. However, at the classroom level, educators still encounter many challenges.

The conference builds on established partnerships between the Moroccan Center for Civic Education, the Ministry of Education of the Kingdom of Morocco and partners in the US, the UK, Canada, Europe and MENA region.  Through its keynote speeches, presentations, workshops, round tables, posters and networking sessions, the conference will enable in-depth exchanges between participants from multiple backgrounds. It will bring together academics, professional educators  and high level representatives from Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States, Europe, the MENA region together with experts and civil society leaders, educators, media and youth representatives from Morocco.

    Goals

    • To promote students’ awareness and activism that will benefit communities.
    • To stimulate an in-depth exchange of views, the sharing of successful experiences and the modeling of  classroom best practices with respect to democratic citizenship
    • To identify the skills, knowledge, and values that learners will need as active and democratic citizens.
